The Bernie Dexter 1950s Style Pink Manor Print Amy Swing Dress

It has been too long since I have done a blog post.  For most of October I wore a Halloween print dress and will eventually do a blog post.  I was in a pin-prom in was a runner up from prom queen. I met a lot of cool people and won some cool prizes.  I had  blast and it was my first time seeing Burlesque performers in person – i love it!!!!!!!!!

Today I am reviewing the Bernie Dexter 1950s Style Pink Manor Print Amy Swing Dress .  A very early Xmas gift purchased by the Mr.  from Unique Vintage.  I fell in love with it on the website and even more so when I got it and put it on.  It is so comfortable with a beautiful unique print and it has pockets!!!!!!  It zips up the back and has a black bow around the waist that you can make tighter so it really accentuates your figure and is very flattering. I love the bottom of the dress; it has a paintings surrounded by red and gold and blue and pink flowers.  I got a medium and it fits perfect then again all of my Bernie dresses are a size medium.  This dress is a MUST-HAVE.  I highly recommend it.

Halloween Treat Skirt from The Oblong Box Shop – it is a MUST HAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So there was much anticipation over the release of the Halloween Treat skirt from The Oblong Box shop and I was lucky I was able to get my hands on it because it sold out in record time! I did hear that she plans on doing another run so I suggest following The Oblong Box shop on instagram and signing up for their newsletter/fan club on their website. I will have links below.

You can read about the owner/photographer/designer Denialle Von Fitch here:

Now onto the review of the skirt.  She says if you are in between sizes, size up as her skirts have no stretch and this is absolutely true.  I got a size medium and it fits perfectly. The fabric is soft and the skirt itself is adorable and super comfortable and flattering.   I am wearing it to work today with the Doris top and belt from Pin Up Girl Clothing and a hair flower from niccococreations and a Kreepsville skull necklace.  And of course some Bakelite bangles 🙂

I would have to say it is one of my favorite skirts and absolutely perfect for Halloween or anytime really. After all, for some of us #everydayisHalloween 🙂   For those that didn’t get it I hope you get it next run.  It is totally worth it.

Poetic License shoes – embrace your inner pin-up girl

So a few weekends ago the hubby and I went to Hampden and went into one of my favorite shoe stores Ma Petite Shoe  http://mapetiteshoe.com/  and I walked out with this pair of shoes from Poetic License: Attraction in Black

I love the packaging and the fact that they are super cute and very comfortable. I also love the fact that when you go to their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/poeticlicenceshoes their mission is “To make every lady feel like a pin up girl!”  I would say mission accomplished!   I also got my hands on these beauties: Betsey Buttons in Burgundy.  I love that they look Victorian with a modern twist and I found them to be true to size and very comfortable.

I decided to style the shoes with this outfit:

If you haven’t checked out poetic license I highly suggest you do.  You won’t be disappointed 🙂 http://www.poeticlicenceshoes.com/

Age is just a number my friends

So here we go…………people talk about weight discrimination, race discrimination but no one talks about age discrimination. I got into pin-up a year ago at 39.  Age is a number my friends and I do believe that we are like fine wine….as we age we get better. Don’t let anyone tell you that you are are “too old” to be a pin-up. Pin-up is classy, timeless and ageless. It saddens me when people say Madonna at 56 is “too old” to still be performing. And I realize folks, she is not a pin-up per say, but why shouldn’t she still be performing? She looks and moves better than most twenty something’s!!!!!! Debbie Harry of Blondie was a pin-up so to speak in the 70’s punk scene and she is now 70 years old and still performing!   Most people don’t believe me when I tell them I am about to turn 40. My co-workers jokingly refer to me as “Benjamin Button” and say that I am aging backwards. I did my first pin-up competition at 39 and got second place. Not bad for someone who had never done anything like that before and was brand new to this world. My 2nd competition was in a completely different state and I got third place. I have also been in two magazines. Once I really decided to delve into this beautiful world, I knew I wanted to be an advocate and a positive voice for “don’t let age dictate what you can or cannot do”. If you have a dream, pursue it. I have to tell you at first I was afraid to say my age because I was waiting for the “why are you getting into this now? Aren’t you “too old”. But so far my transformation into pin-up has been met with kindness and positivity  (and I consider myself incredibly lucky) which I believe we should spread around. Now I am not saying it couldn’t happen but I hope to show people that age doesn’t matter.  So my friends two words to get out of your vocabulary “too old”.   Another one I wish people would think about before they blurt out is “you look good……………..for your age”. While I realize that people are trying to compliment you, simply say wow – you look good. Leave the age part out of it. After all, we are not defined by our age. I am a big Harry Potter nerd so if I may be so bold to quote Dumbleore, a quote that has stuck with me throughout life : “It is our choices that show us what we truly are far more an our abilities”.   Many people ask me “what does it feel like to turn 40” and my honest response, no different than when I turned 21 or 30 except I have more wisdom and life experience. I am in better shape now than when I was in my twenties. I go to the gym at least 4 times a week and I am much more conscious of what I put into my body. When my grandmother passed away my Uncle said something very profound about her passing: “she did not take care of her body, there in the end, her body did not take care of her”. We all loved her so much and she was the reason I got into red lipstick and dying my hair black and we watched old movies together when I was a little girl. My pin-up name (Rita Lazarus) was in honor of her.   So my friends follow and pursue your dreams and lift each other up. In the end what really matters is how we treat one another and how we make people feel. And just remember my friends regardless of how old you are you are always fabulous. XOXO   It’s never too late to be a pin-up. 🙂

Two Jenny skirts from pinupgirlclothing.com styled two different ways

If you talk to any girl who likes to dress in the vintage, pin-up or retro style (whatever you would like to call it) then you will definitely find that we all have a love of the Jenny skirt from pinupgirlclothing.com.  It comes in many patterns, and is super comfortable and flattering.  You can style them anyway you like as well.  Here I take the Mary Blair Parasol Jenny skirt and the Italian Landscape  Jenny skirt and show how you can style them two different way.  I have many different patterns of the Jenny skirt but I would like to focus on these two.

For the Parasol Jenny – the first time I wore it I paired it with a shirt from Wet Seal that I have had forever, shoes from Kohl’s, some vintage style bangles and Hell Bunny hair scarf.  The second time I wore it – I went all pinupgirlclothing.com!  The peasant top, the belt and the shoes are all from pinupgirlclothing.com and my hair flower is NiCoCo’s Creations. http://www.niccococreations.com/#!home/c43q

For the Italian Landscape; the first time I chose to play with patterns and wore it with a hell bunny striped top.  I was inspired by Miss Amy May (http://missamymay.com/)  who is one of my favorite pin-ups!  I am wearing some bakelite bangles, earrings by Dazzalite, (https://www.etsy.com/shop/Dazzalite) belt is also pinupgirlclothing.com and my shoes are Jessica Simpson from Nordstorm which I mentioned in a previous post.  And today I went all pinupgirlclothing.com (shirt, belt, shoes, skirt) and paired it again with bakelite bangles and a hair flower from NiCoCo’s Creations. http://www.niccococreations.com/#!home/c43q

The Jenny skirt is a great addition to the pin-up wardrobe.  It comes in so many different patterns – what’s not to love? http://www.pinupgirlclothing.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=jenny+skirt

Tatyana Dresses

I had heard a lot about Tatyana dresses and in fact someday I hope to visit the boutiques in person.  Today I am reviewing the Alika Red Retro Inspired Pencil Wiggle Dress.  It is beyond fabulous.  It has stretch and is super comfortable and flatters all the right curves.  I love how vibrant the red is. I chose to pair it with a NiCoCo creations hair flower and Jessica Simpson shoes.  I also have the dress in the Alika Circle Black Retro Dress but I have not worn it out and about yet.  Link below to purchase:

I also have the Flower Cart dress which is super cute and comfortable!  It is one of my favorite dresses. I recommend sizing down.  I am wearing a small in the below pictures.  It comes with a yellow belt but I paired it with a pin-up girl clothing red belt and once again my Jessica Simpson shoes (I love them because they are red and look retro) and some bakelite bangles and of course no outfit is complete without a hair flower. I am wearing the Big Red, a pin-up’s go to from NiCoCo Creations.  Have you made any Tatyana purchases?  What are your favorites?  I really hope to get my hands on the Caliber dress, but alas I cannot seem to locate one.

Styling the Celine skirt from ModCloth – two different ways

I purchased a while back the Celine skirt from Modcloth in both black red.  It is a super cute comfortable skirt and very versatile.  I have styled the red two different ways.  When I first wore it I paired it with a Steady top, belt from White House Black Market, Claire Heels from Bettie Page shoes and a hair bandana from Hell Bunny.

20150619_082449

Today I am wearing it with a Hell Bunny top, the same belt, Bettie Page Alicia heels and a red rose from NiCoCo creations.

20150814_085340 20150814_085349 20150814_085355

If you work in a more conservative setting you could pair it with a white button down shirt tucked in and a simple pair of black pumps.  Or for a night out on the town the voodoo vixen top from pin-up girl clothing in black sateen with their black lace bolero and red high heels or black high heels.  My go to’s are the Sam Edelman Novato Platform sling back pump in black suede or Jessica Simpson Sabella Slingback Half d’Orsay Sandal in red patent.

I also styled the black celine skirt with the pin-up girl clothing peasant top in chartreuse and the Bettie Page Claire Heels (will be doing a review soon on my love of Bettie Page shoes because of how comfortable they are.  And nothing finishes off an outfit like an amazing red lipstick.  I have so many favorites! (future post about that soon!)
